Greenview Baptist Church - New Family Life Center|
Columbia, SC

Having established a relationship with several church members, John Bowman Architect was commissioned to design a schematic design for a new Family Life Center. This new building will be located within the same vicinity as the existing church and situated on a prominent traffic corridor leading into the City of Columbia. Within the design the spaces were to include a gymnasium/multipurpose space, administration spaces, education classrooms, resource library, commercial kitchen, and a wellness center.

The design resembles an “L” shaped facility that is responsive to the proposed site allowing the programmed spaces, and site adaptation to coincide together. Anchoring the floor plan is the gymnasium/multipurpose space that can accommodate up to 500 people. Flanked in the front of the gym is an open entry lobby with direct access to the men and womens toilets and a circulation corridor. To the right of the entry lobby is a corridor providing access to the administration offices/spaces, education classrooms, computer lab, and commercial kitchen.

The design of the center is intended to complement the existing church and surrounding community as well as providing a new statement to the community. The front elevation of the center is a combined mixture of brick and stucco. A brick water table wraps around as an anchor, while brick facades are used to accent protruding spaces from the floor plan. To mark a sense of entry and arrival, large brick columns with inset brick detailing make a statement to the front of the center.
